A friend of mine just shared a link with me, which I thought I’d post: SpaceOut, a blog that lists “the cultural events happenings in Kerala, with programme announcements, reviews and links.”

Some pictures from Na(e?)yyar Dam

Went to Nayyar Dam (in Thiruvananthapuram District) last weekend. Getting out of the city and into the hills made me realize how much I miss Wayanad! I’ll be there in just a few weeks, hopefully to interview a few organic farmers and exporters. And be with family, of course.

It reflects its European influences to this day (and I don’t mean just in the high number of Europeans that tend to flock here).
My favorite sight from Kochi, though, was that of goats who would go out of their way (and squeeze as tightly as possible underneath small roof edges) to avoid being soaked by [...]

The “relaxed people of South India”?

“Guidebooks always write that South India, and Kerala in particular, is full of relaxed and laid back people; that it seems to be on a different schedule than the rest of India. That hasn’t exactly been Sapna and my experience, however. It is true that you spend a lot of time not doing very much [...]

The non-stop heavy rain has made bus rides and walking pretty unpleasant, though (although I cannot complain about the [...]

I can’t decide whether visiting Kerala beaches during the monsoon is a good decision or not. I know most people would advise avoiding them during this time of year (muddy and rough waters, rain, lots of closed restaurants and resorts), but I found the dearth of tourists and hawkers to be very calming. [...]
“Taking Drinks” in Kerala
Posted in Gender and sexuality, Tourism, Women and feminism, tagged Trivandrum on 1 July 2009 | 4 Comments »
Yesterday, my host grandma asked me if I “take drinks.” After a few moments of confusion (I had originally thought she was asking me if I wanted water, although I should not have been surprised with her real interest, given the frequency I am asked this question), I realized she wanted to know if [...]
Organic news from Kerala

From the Hindu: Tribal communities continue to export organic pepper (grown in reserves) to Germany
(Some more background from other news articles: Apparently this scheme was set up to help members of these communities battle things like bad debt. A parallel eco-tourism scheme, aimed to attract well-off people to the Periyar Tiger Reserve, is also in [...]
